NEBDN Dental sedation nursing certificate - What is involved and How much does it cost?
The NEBDN dental sedation nursing certificate is considered by some to be the gold standard in dental nurse sedation training at present. DOWNLOAD COURSE INFORMATION BELOW
With our course All lectures and learning knowledge content is completed online and then the nurses will complete a record of competence in your surgery which will be signed off by the sedation dentist or a dental nurse with sedation qualification.
The record of competence is the assessment record and is completed currently on an online platform hosted by NEBDN called Pebblepad. It includes assessment for 20 intravenous and 10 inhalation sedation cases, completion of 2 x 2200 word cases studies and completion of around 10 competencies (5 of each e.g. taking blood pressure) and 9 supplementary outcomes
All dentists and nurses carrying out sedation in practice need to complete ILS training as well so this needs completing prior to the final examination; we have preferred providers for this but usually practices have their own ILS providers that they use for ILS or BLS training.
Examinations are taken at your local exam centre in September and March each year. The next is In March 2024 and will be taken ONLINE this year on MaxExam software hosted by NEBDN. Any enrolments from now will be for the Sept24 exam.
Here is the link for the enrolment page also: courses.dentalsedationcourses.co.uk/courses/DentalSedationNursing
The fees are £899 per nurse which includes one examination fee

What is the difference between the NEBDN nursing course and the IACSD Nursing course?
Both are equivalent qualifications in the view of the GDC (general dental council) but they are accredited by the two different accrediting bodies namely the NEBDN and the IACSD, the RCS consider the NEBDN certificate course to be the gold standard currently.
The course lectures cover the same topics and both result in the certificate in dental sedation nursing allowing you to act as the second appropriately trained person but there are a few key differences
1. Paperwork - the NEBDN course has quite a lot more paperwork involved as you will be expected to complete tasks such as patient questionnaire, audit, medical emergency scenarios etc as part of the course. The IACSD course has much less paperwork but still covers the training syllabus. for the NEBDN course you complete an online record of competence which you should expect to allow about 1-2 hours a week for the duration of your course enrolment.
2. Assessments - both courses have ongoing practical and online assessments but the NEBDN course has a final formal examination that must be passed in order to pass the course, this exam is taken at your local exam centre. The IACSD course has no final examination so is completed entirely online and at your dental practice
3. Supervisor/mentor approval - any experienced dental sedation dentist or NEBDN sedation qualified nurse can act as your mentor for the NEBDN course. For the IACSD course your supervisor requires separate approval from the Royal College of Surgeons; we sort this out for you but your supervisor will need to have completed a sedation course, kept their CPD upto date and be providing or assisting regularly with sedation in order to act as your mentor/supervisor. (Approval can take a few weeks to come through)
4. For the NEBDN course we will send you a revision textbook and learning textbook to supplement the course; for the IACSD course we will send you the learning textbook and a logbook to log your cases (if completing the individual IACSD IV or RA course then there is no textbook, just the logbook)
5. Fees are as follows and include all exam or mentor fees
NEBDN - £899
IACSD - £499
We feel neither Course is better than the other in terms of content, the NEBDN course has been around longer and the IACSD avoids the need for a formal examination. The IACSD is more easy going in the sense that there is reduced paperwork and no strict deadlines but it is still a fully comprehensive training pathway.
As all theory is completed online then you can start either anytime and the next examination date for the NEBDN for which you can enrol with us is 6th September 2024, enrol anytime from now
