NEBDN Dental sedation nursing certificate - What is involved and How much is it?
The NEBDN dental sedation nursing certificate is considered by some to be the gold standard in dental nurse sedation training at present.

With our course All lectures and learning knowledge content is completed online and then the nurses will complete a record of competence in your surgery which will be signed off by the sedation dentist or a dental nurse with sedation qualification.

The record of competence is a booklet of experience and includes assessment for 20 IV and 10 inhalation sedation cases, completion of 2 cases studies and completion of 8 competencies and supplementary outcomes such as setting up the surgery, removing a cannula, audit etc.

All dentists and nurses carrying out sedation in practice need to complete ILS training as well so this needs completing prior to the final examination; we have preferred providers for this but usually practices have their own ILS providers that they use for ILS or BLS training.

Examinations are taken at your local exam centre in September and March each year. The next is In March 2021 but enrolment is closed for this.

Otherwise the next examination is September 2021 for which the deadline for enrolment is Friday 30th January 2021.

Here is the link for the enrolment page also: https://dentalsedationcourses.thinkific.com/courses/DentalSedationNursing

The fees are £799 per nurse which includes the examination fee (£195)
What is the difference between the NEBDN nursing course and the IACSD Nursing course?
Both are equivalent qualifications in the view of the GDC (general dental council) but they are accredited by the two different accrediting bodies namely the NEBDN and the IACSD

The courses cover the same topics and both result in the certificate in dental sedation nursing but have a few key differences

1. Paperwork - the NEBDN course has quite a lot more paperwork involved as you will be expected to complete tasks such as patient questionnaire, audit, medical emergency scenarios etc as part of the course. The IACSD course has much less paperwork but still covers all the training requirements in detail.

2. Assessments - both courses have ongoing practical and online assessments but the NEBDN course has a final formal examination that must be passed in order to pass the course, this exam is taken at your local exam centre. The IACSD course has no final examination so is completed entirely online and at your dental practice

3. Supervisor/mentor approval - any experienced dental sedation dentist or NEBDN sedation qualified nurse can act as your mentor for the NEBDN course. For the IACSD course your mentor requires separate approval from the Royal College of Surgeons; we sort this out for you and pay any associated fees in your behalf; your mentor will need to have completed a sedation course, kept their CPD uptown date and be providing or assisting regularly with sedation in order to act as your mentor/supervisor. (Approval usually takes a 1-2 weeks to come through)

4. Both courses you get the recommended textbook and USB resources

5. Fees are as follows and include all exam or mentor fees
NEBDN - £799
IACSD - £499

We feel neither Course is better than the other in terms of content, the NEBDN course has been around longer and the IACSD avoids the need for a formal examination. The IACSD is more easy going in the sense that there is reduced paperwork and no strict deadlines but it is still a fully comprehensive training pathway.

As all theory is completed online then you can start either anytime and the next examination date for the NEBDN will be March 2021

Where are the courses based?
All Courses are completed online and in your own surgery. This is the beauty of blended learning; we have set things up this way in order to make sedation training as accessible and comprehensive as possible. The Only course where you go off site is the NEBDN dental sedation nursing where you will take a written exam at the NEBDN centre in Manchester or at one of our other centres across the UK.
Where do i apply for my mentor to be approved?
For the IACSD courses for which you are not using our experienced mentors or our sedation mentor clinic you will need to send us details about your potential mentor so they can be considered for approval. There is no charge so just email us on info@dentalsedationcourses.co.uk and we can send you an approval form.
When is the NExt NEBDN sedation nursing certificate examination?
Next available Examination date 10/09/21 with the deadline for enrolment 30/01/21
Where can I download an application form for the NEBDN sedation nursing?
You can download an application form from the resources section, alternatively just email us on info@dentalsedationcourses.co.uk and we will send you an application form.
Can I download a record of competence to see what is involved in the NEBDN course?
Yes you can download a sample of the record of competence here; please note the personal one you receive is exactly the same as the sample one except it will have your name on, be in a plastic folder and not have sample written all over it.
Can I Pay Monthly?
Most of the courses must be paid for in full to gain full access. As of 2019 if doing the NEBDN dental sedation nursing course and examination then you are able to pay 4 equal instalments over 4 months (£212.50 x4). Although if you do pay in full for this course you gain a £45 saving over the monthly payment option. We can arrange bespoke payment plans for fully mentored and all inclusive courses just contact us  for more information
Where is my record of competence? - I enrolled over a month ago!
Your personalised Record of Competence is posted out to you directly by the NEBDN; this usually takes 3-4 weeks to arrive but can sometimes take longer as we approach examination time. Once you enrol your application is sent to NEBDN for processing and so don't worry if it has been month and you are still waiting as it will be with you soon. If you still don't have it after 6 weeks please let us know on info@dentalsedationcourses.co.uk and we can follow this up for you. This has now been moved to an online version from 2020 so the turnaround is quicker.
I need to do an update course only - what do you offer?
Our Conscious Sedation Update Course is one of our most popular courses. It covers the latest in conscious sedation, both intravenous and inhalation techniques as well as as a whole host of topics covering the syllabus laid out in the IACSD guidelines, UK plus more. The course will give you 20 verifiable CPD hours and is completed entirely online. It is available for individual dentists and dental nurses, small teams and large teams and can be accessed here:
