Immediate Life Support is a more advanced form of life support over the more common Basic Life Support. Certification in Immediate Life Support is required to be undertaken annually by all members of the sedation team as per the IACSD guidelines.

Adult and Paediatric Dental Sedation Immediate Life Support Course
location: South Midlands and surrounding counties both at venues and in practice for larger teams
For the clinical dental team who wish to provide / assist with conscious Inhalation Sedation and / or IV sedation for adults and children. The Dental Sedation Immediate Life Support course fully complies with IACSD standards for Conscious Sedation in the Provision of Dental Care 2015.
Instructor info
The course developer and lead instructor is Lynn Fox, an experienced Resuscitation Council accredited instructor in advanced adult and paediatric life support: ALS/ILS/EPALS/PILS/GIC. Lynn has 11 years of experience in teaching to hospital cardiac arrest teams and has previously lectured on anaphylaxis for the British Dental Association which is now a BDA online lecture. Lynn has also lectured on Medical emergency drugs in the CPD theatre at the British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show 2018. Lynn also teaches Dental Medical Emergencies to in-house dental practices and groups including The Oxford Post Graduate Dental School at Thames Valley Health Education.

- The Adult and Paediatric Dental Sedation Immediate Life Support course includes:
- Causes and prevention of cardiorespiratory arrest in the adult and child
- ABCDE approach including how to recognise excess sedation emergencies in the adult and child including CNS depression, anaphylaxis, chest pain, asthma, seizure, hypo and choking and other associated emergencies
- Hands-on practice with your emergency dental drugs for the above conditions including IM injection training as time allows.
- Adult and child airway management using positive pressure ventilation & airway adjuncts: Bag Valve Mask, oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airways and i-gels.
- BLS and defibrillation.
- Adult and Paediatric cardiac arrest scenarios.
- Team roles and responsibilities.
Delivered by: To ensure you receive the most beneficial training experience and ongoing quality assurance, courses are taught using a high ratio of instructors to students and only by Resuscitation Council (UK) clinical instructors, clinicians and/or dental medical emergency specialists.
Assessment: Is subject to quality assurance. Assessment is continuous and includes the ABCDE approach, BLS and AED, i-gel and other practical airway management skills for both respiratory depression and cardiac arrest scenarios.
Certificates: For successful candidates, certificates will show 7 hours – this may be fewer if the paediatric component has been ommited – verifiable and enhanced CPD as per the 2018 GDC requirements.
